Buying or selling a home and moving is a major life decision and a complex process.  Bill is available to help you make that transition smooth and successful and to help you find the right resources to match your needs. Bill McBroom of Deborah Myers Real Estate receives award from the San Antonio Conservation Society.

Bill McBroom, of Deborah Myers Real Estate, 1812 Nacogdoches, received an award from the San Antonio Conservation Society on May 30, 2007 for respecting the original building design of his home at 906 E Carson Street in the Government Hill Historic District.  The home was built around 1900 in one of San Antonio’s first “streetcar suburb” neighborhoods.  The neighborhood was once a part of  Fort Sam Houston.  When Fort Sam was first established shortly after the Battle of the Alamo, the neighborhood was a tent billet area, and numerous artifacts from that period remain.  Development began in the late 19th century, soon after the army gave up the land.  Large and elaborate Queen Anne style homes were built on many of the corners for more affluent families, and the middle class occupied small cottages in between.  McBroom’s home is one of these.  It is a four-room New Orleans style Victorian cottage.

The area has recently attracted attention for renovation projects.  It has extensive Victorian and early Arts and Crafts architectural stock ready for renovation. With sprawl slowing, fuel prices at all-time highs, and many people recognizing once again the viability and livability of urban neighborhoods, Government Hill is being recognized as an attractive place to live.  It is a breezy, pleasant hill only two miles from downtown San Antonio.  In addition to it’s affordable historic housing inventory, it has it’s own freeway access onto I-35, making it one of the most conveniently located neighborhoods in the city.

The foot of the neighborhood, at Broadway and US 281, is the site of the Pearl Brewery project.  It is a prime area of redevelopment in San Antonio, including the Broadway corridor and the extension of the riverwalk to Brackenridge Park.

Mr. McBroom’s home on Carson St, near the top of the historic district, sustained damage from two fires, and was abandoned for many years.  Now, it represents one of the best restoration projects in the area, and is an example for neighbors’ projects.  Within the past year, he has researched the history of outbuildings on the property, and has built a garage matching the house very close to the location of the original carriage house. Extensive landscaping and a French Gothic picket fence complete the project.

McBroom has always been interested in neighborhoods and historic renovation, and served on the city Planning Commission in Montpelier, Vermont, a small historic city.

He relocated to San Antonio specifically to take part in the revitalization of older neighborhoods.  He believes there are unique opportunities here unavailable in many other cities because our urban core renovation has just begun.

Bill McBroom is now a realtor specializing in older San Antonio neighborhoods.  He can be found at Deborah Myers Real Estate.
